Background
Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) will soon be debating Stage Three of the Scottish Social Security Bill and the independent advocacy amendment to the Bill. The independent advocacy amendment is supported by the Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance, Advocard, Disability Agenda Scotland, the Health & Social Care Alliance and SCVO.

This is an important amendment which will ensure that anyone applying for a social security entitlement will be able to access support from an independent advocacy organisation, not just those who identify as having a disability. This will mean people will have assistance to provide all the relevant information about their situation, their condition and their circumstances, and will mean that the new social security agency staff will be more likely to make the right decision about entitlements the first time, saving public money.

The benefits of accessing independent advocacy support for those who struggle to make themselves understood for any reason have been well evidenced. Without this support, many vulnerable groups will struggle to access or navigate the new system and may be prevented from receiving the vital financial support that they are entitled to receive.

Please vote for this amendment so that marginalised people have the right support at the right time in order to secure their entitlement.
