This workshop has been designed to challenge some of the myths about prison. Students will learn how sentencing decisions are made and the reasons for which a court may hand down a custodial sentence. They will also compare the reality of life inside with popular media representations of imprisonment. Finally a comparison will be drawn between our own prison system and that of the Nordic countries.  Barred For Life? involves several co-operative activities where students will work together to solve problems and develop their understanding of the subject.

A History of Crime & Punishment in Scotland - free 8-week course

Day and time: Monday evenings 6-8pm

Dates: Monday 4th February 2019 to Monday 25th March 2019

Venue: Angus Carers Centre

This course aims to be a fun and interesting insight into a range of historical topics both familiar and perhaps not so familiar. In particular we will look at the development of the modern criminal justice system and question why institutions such as the police and prisons developed in the way that they did. Also coming under scrutiny will be the gendered treatment of both victims and offenders. We will challenge popular myths about witchcraft, adultery and infanticide subjecting each to critical examination and in the process tackling some of our own inherent biases.
